Old Nasty Habit
Nov. 15th, 2010 06:33 pmI have not had a cigarette since 1992, but for some reason I am craving one today. I haven't even thought about smoking in years (other than being glad I no longer smoke, because who can afford it these days!!)
and yet, today, there it is. Making a phone call this morning, I remembered how I used to light up before dialing. After lunch, and again after dinner, I remembered how good that after a meal cigarette was, the perfect dessert. I know, I know, nasty habit. Smelly clothes, bad breath, unhealthy lungs. But I knew all these things back when I did smoke and I smoked anyway. Maybe it's just a nostalgia thing. Maybe it's the time of year and this dreary day. Fall is somehow a smoky season, with its burnt umber colors and woodsy smell. Maybe I'm just having some sort of seasonal flashback. Ah well, 'those were the days, my friend' as the song goes. I won't be going back to my wicked ways (not even if I could afford it). But it won't surprise me if I dream tonight about striking a match and lighting up that Marlboro.
